Service Fellowship
“Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will, its seat is in the heart,
and it must be an inseparable part of our being.” - M.K. Gandhi

The Gandhi Service Fellowship began in 2009 as a program of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence. The Fellowship trains high school and college students in the practices and principles of nonviolence by offering mentorship, advanced learning through seminars and workshops, and the opportunity to serve the larger community.
Gandhi Fellows design and coordinate a wide range of projects intended to serve a diverse population in the Rochester community. Fellowship projects have included a weeklong alternative spring break for college students, a nonviolence education program which is taught in the In- School Support room at Wilson Foundation Academy in Rochester, interfaith banquets and social forums, the promotion of sustainability through the University of Rochester Microfarm, and even management of the Gandhi Institute website.
This year the Gandhi Service Fellowship includes students from the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher College. The Fellows come from different parts of the world, and they have different vocational goals, but they all share a passion to develop skills in nonviolence, and they all want to apply their learning to help those in need.
If you are interested in learning more about the Gandhi Service Fellowship, please call the Gandhi Institute directly at 585-276-4962. To be eligible for the Fellowship you must be between the ages of 17-24, a resident of the City of Rochester or Monroe County, and have the ability to commit to a year- long program.
Come be the change you want to see in the world!
